10 Rock Music Songs That Were Almost Never Released
2. (I Can’t) Get No Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
According to legend, so take this with a 60s-sized grain of salt, Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones wrote (I Can't) Get No Satisfaction in his sleep.
In the morning, he woke up to find a tape player by his bedside. He played it to himself, listened to two minutes of him messing around on the acoustic guitar, and then another 40 of him snoring.
It was originally intended to be a piece of filler for an unspecified album, but Richards and Jagger were eventually outvoted by the rest of the band and crew, leading to Satisfaction getting put out as a single. On this rare occasion, the Glimmer Twins were wrong.
Satisfaction became a must-play, helping raise the Stones' already-impressive stock even higher. The Gibson Fuzzbox, the effect pedal used to create its signature sound, became so popular that the company sold out all of its stock by the end of 1965.
Whilst it was always intended to be put out, (I Can't) Get No Satisfaction was very nearly relegated to a minor spot in the middle of an album; a position not befitting its greatness in any way.
