10 Rock Musicians That Get Way Too Much Hate
5. Don Henley - Eagles
Coming right out of the Summer of Love, the Eagles were the next band that we all went to for some California sunshine. Even when bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith were breaking into the mainstream with songs that were much more heavy, hearing the soothing sounds of Take It Easy made it seem like everything was going to be okay in the wake of the Vietnam War. We live in a different world than 1972 though, and most of us have to end up dealing with Don Henley...the copyright dictator.
Outside of the Big Lebowski, there's a reason why you don't really hear the Eagles' music too terribly often, with Don never letting people license his music if he doesn't get paid for at least a little bit at the end of the day. In the age of streaming and fans getting back into classic rock, Don is looking more like the 'Old Man Yells at Cloud' of rock and roll, complaining that anyone who uses his music is a thief trying to cheap him out of his hard earned money. As much as we might facepalm now though, it's impossible to deny that voice whenever his songs come on the radio.
For all of the great singers that have come and gone throughout the Eagles' tenure, Don's golden throat has been running strong for years, always managing to ride the tightrope of being serious and accessible at the same time on songs like The End of the Innocence. And for someone who lived through the '80s, Don seems to be one of the few rockstars who made it on MTV and actually managed to escape with his integrity.
