10 Rock Musicians Who Almost Died On Tour
8. Steven Tyler - Aerosmith
Towards the end of the '70s, Aerosmith was basically a skeleton of what they once were. With Joe Perry leaving after falling out with Steven Tyler and Brad Whitford not far behind, the latest iteration of America's greatest rock act seemed to be held together with staples. Though the shows may have gone off without a hitch, Steven Tyler was a time bomb waiting to go off.
During the tour for the album Rock in a Hard Place, Tyler was getting more and more dependent on drugs to make it through the show, which made for a nearly lethal combination when he went onstage. On one occasion, Tyler's demons went a little too far over the edge when it came time to hit the stage. Only a few songs in, Tyler leaned over bassist Tom Hamilton and told him that he couldn't do the show. After Tom pushed him away, Tyler collapsed on the stage and laid there nearly motionless until a roadie came to drag him off.
Since Tyler was basically the main draw of Aerosmith at the time, the band had to cut the show early while they waited for Tyler to straighten himself out. Though Perry and Whitford would enter the fold again a few years later, Steven Tyler was basically at death's door in the meantime.
