10 Rock Musicians Who Almost Died On Tour
3. Slash - Guns N Roses
After Appetite for Destruction, the brotherhood of Guns N Roses started to go downhill really fast. As Axl Rose started to seize creative control and the rest of the guys got more and more strung out in the studio, most of the Use Your Illusion records ended up being some of the most overloaded material of the group's entire career. If they thought the recording was bad though, they were in for a rude awakening when the tour kicked in.
As they crisscrossed around the world twice, GNR was starting to become a time bomb of problems, eventually leading to Izzy Stradlin quitting after not being able to put up with Axl's antics anymore. Though Axl was probably the least dependable person in the mix, Slash was heading down a really dark path, using drugs and alcohol as an anesthetic to get over the constant touring life. One night just after the show, a roadie was called to the band's floor only to find Slash collapsed in the hallway completely blue, with no real pulse.
Once the paramedics showed up, they were able to revive him, only to have him get immediately messed up shortly afterwards. By the time everyone got back to Los Angeles after the tour, the classic lineup was all but dead, as Slash quit the band with Duff McKagan quickly following behind him. Slash may be on the road to recovery now, but this is where we came dangerously close to losing a guitar legend.
