10 Rock Songs That Artists Didn't Want To Record
9. Start Me Up - The Rolling Stones
Not many Rolling Stones fans look to the '80s as their favorite era of the band. Across albums like Dirty Work and Undercover, it was clear that this was the time to settle into retirement mode, make albums, and cash checks at every turn. Though there was a lot wrong with the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band at the time, Start Me Up still has yet to weather with age.
That is, once the Stones actually bothered to record it. At the time, the back to basics rock and roll of this song wasn't really something that Jagger and Richards were influenced by anymore. When it came time to actually record the track, most of the session ended up devolving so much that the song sounded like a warped version of reggae by the end. In fact, the version of the song we know and love was actually the only take that didn't have any reggae break at the end.
So, now imagine Keef and Jagger sitting around and having the one song they didn't care for become the biggest hit they had had in nearly a decade. Despite any problems they may have had with it, Start Me Up turned into one of the few shining examples of the Stones staying true to themselves and delivering their signature magic. Turns out that even when these guys are at half capacity, they can still come through with some amazing material.
