10 Rock Songs That Left Us All Hanging
5. Fairies Wear Boots - Black Sabbath
Looking back on the beginnings of Black Sabbath, not every song was as dark and gloomy as you may have thought back in the day. Even with the title track having the dreaded tritone sprinkled into the mix, Geezer Butler has fessed up saying that he was trying to copy a classic piece of music that he heard when he actually came up with the idea. And in between the songs about the occult, there’s a song like Fairies Wear Boots that completely drops the point of the song entirely.
Going through the origins of this song, Ozzy Osbourne originally had the first lyrics of this song as a bit of a joke, as a way to criticize skinheads that had harassed him one day, who were known for wearing Doc Marten boots when they went out every day. Once he passed his initial idea over to Butler to work out the rest of the lyrics, Geezer pretty much came up empty, and decided to use the final verse to go on a completely different tangent, as he talks about going to the clinic and his doctor giving him a lecture about how he drinks and smokes way too much.
For all of the setup for this song, this kind of turnaround just feels like a bit of a troll joke played on all of us, chalking up these fairies to just being a little too stoned one day. On the other side of consciousness though, there are still these steel-toed fairies that are looking to tear you apart from the moment they see you.
