10 Rock Songs That Left Us All Hanging
6. I'd Do Anything For Love - Meat Loaf
The entire aesthetic of Meat Loaf’s music has never been about subtlety by any stretch. Going into songs like Bat Out Of Hell, this feels like something that’s ripped out of the Broadway playbook, only with rock and roll accompaniment rather than a full orchestra. Broadway shows don’t always have the most linear story from beginning to end, and Meat Loaf didn’t even try to have the answers when he talked about doing anything for love.
Though this remains one of Loaf’s most celebrated hits, it’s almost become a joke in the music community that we never find out what the supposed ‘that’ in the song is. While you can kind of connect the dots in the music video, with Meat being completely done up in horrifying Beauty and the Beast style makeup, he never expresses what he wouldn’t do for love.
This kind of cliffhanger has had a bit of a life of its own these days, becoming much more of a meme than an actual song, as everyone throws their hat into the ring and says what they wouldn’t do for love if posed the same question. It’s easy for writers to leave their lyrics up to interpretation from time to time, but you guys at least have to give something a little bit more than just this, right?
