10 Rock Songs You Didn't Realize Were Protest Tracks
1. Do The Evolution - Pearl Jam
For everyone who got into Pearl Jam all the way back in the ‘90s, are we just going to forget just how dark their first album was? There may have been the soon to be stadium anthems like Alive on the record, but you also had songs like Jeremy and Daughter later down the line that painted a pretty grim picture of what young people are going through. That was always the victim’s perspective, and Do the Evolution gave us Eddie Vedder’s take on the people who carry out everything.
Going through every single verse of this song, Eddie is playing the overexaggerated version of what government officials represent, absolutely drunk with power and not looking to please anyone but themselves. They brag about being the more evolved of the pieces, constantly taking the land they want and doing whatever they please as long as it’s irresponsible, all while praying in church every Sunday to convince themselves that they are still doing something righteous at the end of the day.
By the time the actual choir comes in, you can hear them drifting slightly out of tune, almost as a sign of the man’s image getting more and more flawed as the song plays out. This character isn’t planning on being a loser any time soon though. In his mind, he’s the true alpha male, and he’s going to let everyone in the immediate era know that he means business.
