10 Rock Stars That Completely Changed Their Genre
5. Tegan and Sara
Ever since the era of So Jealous, Tegan and Sara were always gradually sliding into poppier territory with every record. Though the Con proved to be a return to their indie rock roots, the tides were definitely turning when we got the first few singles for what would become Heartthrob. Once we had the record in front of us, the Quinn Twins had decided to serve up some of the sweetest ear candy of their career.
Unlike other acts that just fumble the ball trying to make a pop record, both Tegan and Sara's chops at crafting vocal melodies and fleshing out arrangements prove that they know what it takes to sit down and make a meaningful melody. Aside from the general construction of the music, the edge of the rock sound that fans were used to hadn't really gone anywhere...just touched up a little bit for maximum impact.
With the help of big name producers like Greg Kurstin and Green Day producer Rob Cavallo, songs like Love They Say and Goodbye Goodbye have the same type of melodic framework you would find in today's pop scene, only amped up that much more to hit you like a punch in the face rather than just hang around in the background. Even though this could have easily gone the route of pop trash, the Quinn Twins have managed to transition into new territory without even batting an eye.
