10 Rock Stars That Completely Changed Their Genre
3. Billy Joel
Most rock stars these days don't really come in the form of Billy Joel anymore. Then again, Joel was already a bit of an oddity when he started out anyway, being the more rustic and workhorse piano player this side of Elton John. Though Joel has always been a bit of an Everyman in rock music, there was a time when he wanted to be the ruler of all known planets.
Or that's what you would probably think if you had heard Attila for the first time. Contrary to the overly edgy band that populates the metal scene these days, Attila was the name of the first major record that the Piano Man played on, framing it as a hard rock version of prog music, complete with a cheesy as hell organ accompaniment. Then again, it's no wonder why something like this didn't last, considering what we know of Billy Joel.
Just from the press photos alone, these guys were soooo not cut out to give acts like Yes a run for their money, instead looking like the kind of guys you would find at a particularly bad open mic night on the more grimy side of New Jersey. While Billy may have found his calling in music, thank the musical gods that we didn't have to live in a world where he was competing with the likes of Genesis .
