10 Rock Stars That Went Country (And Nailed It)

2. Jerry Cantrell

Throughout this list we've gone through our fair share of genre jumps. First we had punk rockers trying their hand at country, then alternative acts, but how the hell would a metal veteran be able to make his guitar twang? These seem like the furthest genres in the world, but they both have that same kind of darkness that everyone knows too well.

It's not like Jerry Cantrell isn't a good acoustic player or anything, if records like Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies are any indication. In the years since the group's hiatus though, Jerry was asked to contribute a song to a Willie Nelson tribute record, choosing to perform I've Seen All This World I Care To See. While this song may have been written by a country player, it's shellshocking how well is works as a traditional Alice in Chains sounding track, almost acting like a companion piece to something like Don't Follow.

After the tribute record wrapped up, Willie even gave his blessing to Jerry, eventually sitting down and talking to him about the kind of depressed headspace that he was when he first sat down to write that song. In the world of music though, you can always recognize the darkness in someone's soul. You may not be able to find your way out of it every single day, but putting it down in song like this helps make things just a little bit better.
