10 Rock Stars Who Never Wanted To Be Famous
9. Mike Campbell - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
It's pretty easy to be anonymous when you're in a band like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. After all, since the guy everyone wants to pay attention to has his name on the ticket, it's expected that the other members just fade into the background. Then again, it's not like Mike Campbell is exactly complaining either.
Once the Heartbreakers first tasted success off of albums like Damn the Torpedoes, drummer Stan Lynch was getting increasingly frustrated with the attention being solely on Petty. On the opposite side was Campbell, who almost missed the opportunity to join the band out of shyness alone. When Petty had his hometown group Mudcrutch in the early '70s, Campbell was virtually a ghost on stage, often staying away from the spotlight and being inaudible whenever it actually came time to deliver any sort of backing vocals.
However, this is one of those instances where the music really does all the talking for him. Despite being the more reclusive member of the Heartbreakers, Campbell's delicate touch on his guitar has helped with Petty classics like Breakdown, Refugee, and Here Comes My Girl over the years. The hits don't stop there though, with Mike having a hand in writing tracks for other artists, like coming up with the backing track for Don Henley's The Boys of Summer. He might not say a word, but when you have someone with this kind of magic inside of them, it's best not to question it.
