9. Introducing Bagpipes Into Metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHUEuIf3aCg&feature=youtu.be When you consider what makes up a metal band, you probably think of heavy drums, detuned guitars, screamed or growled vocals, and riffs, lots of riffs. Oh yeah, and you think of bagpipes, right? Yes, the bagpipes, those droning balloons full of wind. An instrument that initially sounds like a dead beached whale, seconds from exploding, before morphing into something resembling a deranged crow trying to play the recorder. In short, theyre the antithesis of metal, and their inclusion on at least one song on every single Korn album is pretty extraordinary when you think about it. They were introduced as part of Korns musical ensemble on Shoots And Ladders from their debut album, and feature at some point during just about all their live shows. Once upon a time, a metal frontman wheezing away on a traditional Scottish instrument would be seen as weird. But nowadays, thanks to Jonathan Davis and Korn, its seen as ever-so-slightly less weird.
