10 Shoegazing Epics You May Not Have Heard

3. Stereolab €“ Three Longers Later

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9Bv8L0SRek Track four on the new My Bloody Valentine - Is This And Yes - is a spectral keyboard vehicle for Blinda Butcher's faint but beguiling vocals. If this five minute chunk of queasy-listening left you hungry for more, Stereolab will make your wildest dreams come true. Their sound slowly evolved, over the years, from a distorted druggy motorik chug to a more refined sort of jazzy space-age lounge pop. Tracking the subtle evolution from album to album makes for a fascinating listen, but throughout their career they always sounded as though they were happily floating in space. Three Longers Later is the most spaced-out track from the most out-spaced album from a perennially spaced-out career. It appears in the middle of 1994's Mars Audiac Quintet. When heard alongside the latest My Bloody Valentine, it's hard not to raise an eyebrow. However, where Blinda's vocals are content to just drift, Three Longers Later instead takes off €“ surging the interstellar into overdrive. If you're interested in forging a lifelong obsession with Stereolab (and they really do make music that could last you a lifetime); choose any one of their 14 albums and work backwards chronologically from there. Then work your way forwards. Further Listening €“ Jenny Ondioline (Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements, 1994)
