10 Song Collaborations That Happened By Accident
4. Foo Fighters' Soulful Backing - Concrete and Gold
After toying with the idea of how to record a rock album, Dave Grohl took the Foo Fighters back to the simple studio environment on Concrete and Gold. Ducking into EastWest Studios in Hollywood, the band started working with Greg Kurstin to create one of the biggest sounding records of their career. In addition to the superstar behind the mixing board, the band also stumbled upon some great collaborators just outside the studio doors.
While on a break from recording, Grohl was working out the title track of the album when he ran into Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men in the parking lot. After exchanging small talk, Grohl jumped on the opportunity to have an actual soul singer on his record. Once Stockman had finished his session, he went next door and provided his vocals for the outro.
The song was already a dense track to begin with, but the way Stockman's vocals lay over the ending make the entire song feel like it's descending down from the clouds. Grohl admitted he didn't have the first clue as to how Stockman pulled it off, but he did say he was grateful to have nabbed one of the greatest voices of the 90's on his record.
