10 Song Collaborations That Happened By Accident
3. Tom Petty Steals A Perfect Pop Song - Don't Come Around Here No More
Tom Petty was known as the lone wolf of the rock world throughout the 70's. Even as the 80's opened up, Petty's unique way with words seemed to be its own separate entity that was completely removed from anything else in the scene. However, things started to get a lot more interesting once Petty found a comrade in Dave Stewart.
First breaking onto the scene with Eurythmics, Stewart's style was something that Petty really clicked with, but it was a strange road to get there. When Petty first met Stewart, he was working with Stevie Nicks on one of her solo albums, which was being produced by Petty's producer Jimmy Iovine. Throughout the session, Iovine kept getting annoyed that Nicks' lyrics weren't gelling with Stewart's hook line of "Don't Come Around Here No More."
Frustrated, Nicks eventually asked Petty to write the lyrics, but after Petty got his hands on it, he ended up liking the tape looped track so much that he included it on his album Southern Accents. From there, the song became one of the biggest hits of Petty's career and the beginning of a long-lasting friendship with Stewart. Nicks and Iovine may have gotten a raw deal, but the rock world was left with Petty's most ethereal cut.
