10 Song Meanings Everyone Gets Wrong
5. Wonderwall - Oasis
Every joker who has ever tried to woo someone at a bar or tried an open mic normally has to get around to playing Wonderwall at least once. It almost seems like a rite of passage for people to cover the Oasis classic, having a simple chord progression and Liam Gallagher's booming voice going on about some girl who might be the one that saves him. Seeing how Noel Gallagher was dating his fiance Meg Matthews at the time, it would safe to assume it's about her, right? Wrong.
Having the original title Wishing Stone, Noel had actually written this song long before he and Meg were even an item, until the press seemed to jump on it once What's the Story Morning Glory came out. Even though Noel has always been a bit cagey on what all of his songs are about, he did peel back the curtain just a little bit on this one, saying it's about an imaginary friend that will one day be able to save you from yourself.
He also doesn't hold anything back about the press blowing things out of proportion either, saying that their insistence on this song being about Meg forced him to lie to his wife about the song's origins. You can see why he would go along with it though, right? If you have your wife hearing that one of your greatest hits is written about her, it's hard to really reel that back.
