10 Song Meanings Everyone Gets Wrong
2. Every Breath You Take - The Police
Every single Police album coming out in the '80s saw them inching that much closer to pop music. After becoming one of the biggest names in the late period of new wave in the '70s, hearing songs like Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic saw them toying with a lot more hooks this time around, all while making different sonic turns into the world of calypso along the way. Synchronicity was the true blockbuster album for them though, and Sting made one of the biggest songs of his career about a stalker.
Although the structure of Every Breath You Take is meant to sound intimate most of the time, most people forget that this is not a love song by any stretch. While there is some sort of protective nature behind a line like 'I'll be watching you,' Sting has made it a point to let people know that this is about a stalker as he gets more and more fixated on the object of his affection. If you listen to those lyrics, you never hear what the girl says, and hearing him watching her every move starts to feel pretty gross when adding every other detail about her everyday life.
You may think that the whole thing sounds intimate, but it's the kind of intimacy that makes Sting feel like he's right right outside your window with a pair of binoculars monitoring your every move. The narrator in this song might think that this is a love song, but the only thing that's going to be coming out of a song like this is probably a restraining order and a can of mace to the face.
