10 Songs About How The Music Business Sucks

1. Welcome to the Machine - Pink Floyd

The entire aura of Pink Floyd since the loss of Syd Barrett seemed to be defined by pain. As much as they may have liked being one of the biggest prog bands in the world off the strength of Dark Side of the Moon, the allure of fame had cost them their fallen bandmate, who's mental health spiraled after his departure and would cost him his sanity as the years went on. Though Wish You Were Here stands as their great tribute to their Barrett, Welcome to the Machine also lets the rest of us off with a warning.

After coming out of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, this is the hefty dose of reality, talking about the blunt system that you're forced into when you enter the music industry. From the minute that he comes in, Roger Waters almost sounds like some authoritarian dictator on this track, talking like some almighty god about how they own you from the moment that you enter the business. Much like the gross suits, Roger talks as if he knows this guy's entire life story, looking to just chew him up and spit him out at the first opportunity.

And if the message wasn't subtle enough, you just need to take a look at the cover of the album, as two men go through a business deal and one of them literally getting burned for it. Considering all of the complex feelings that Roger was going through at this time, this kind of cynical view of the music business could practically be a warm up for what would come on The Wall.
