10 Songs About How The Music Business Sucks
4. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge - Nirvana
On only his second record with Nirvana, Kurt Cobain seemed to grow out of the spotlight pretty quickly. Though there was definitely some charm in being one of the biggest frontmen in the world, Kurt wasn't remotely ready to be heralded as Voice of His Generation, withdrawing himself from the public eye whenever he could and not willing to play the game that the rest of the industry was wanting him to. By the time that he got to In Utero, he wasn't even trying to hide his hatred anymore either.
Going through most of this record, you can tell that Kurt is hurting from the past few years, from struggling to find happiness on Dumb to his ongoing struggles with his own personality on Serve the Servants. On Frances Farmer though, he takes a few more swipes at the record industry, calling out all of the suits that only want a piece of him before sending them on their way after they get a photo. For as much as Kurt doesn't make sense in his lyrics some of the time, talking about being relieved after the press goes away is about as clear as day.
While the press is only one facet of his problems, you can tell that it's still eating away at him as well, as he talks about missing the comfort of feeling sad. Being in the spotlight has done a number on him, and at this point he welcomes melancholy if it will make it all stop. It might not be good emotions, but it's better than feeling numb.
