10 Songs Everyone Misunderstood As Kids

9. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA

For many fans around the world, Bruce Springsteen's music is the embodiment of America. From his real life stories to his working class ethic, the Boss has made a career out of taking the American Dream and turning it into some of the greatest rock and roll ever produced.

Then again, "Born in the USA" might not necessarily be just idle flag-waving. Once you break down the essence of this Springsteen cut, the protagonist in this song is much less confident. Instead of the freewheeling rebels of some of the Boss's previous material, this man has just come back from fighting in the Vietnam war and is being met with disdain and anger once returning home.

He goes on to say that the War he fought has cost him his best friend, half of his sanity, and even some of his self respect. The funniest part of this was that kids weren't the only ones not seeing the dark side of this tune. Many of the initial reviews of the album seemed to write it up as if Springsteen was the world-class American kid. Leave it to Springsteen to make a bold condemnation of America's war practices and disguise it as an 80's anthem.
