10 Songs Inspired By Real Events
6. Darkness - Eminem
Over the years, Eminem has proven himself to be one of the more shocking rappers in the game. From his casual offensive bars at the beginning of his career to the genuine horror of his other tracks, Mr. Mathers has certainly earned the title of one of pop music's most off-color trolls. For as much as Em's horrific accounts can feel a bit too shocking, the most hard-hitting tracks are when the subject is all too real.
While Em's most recent album Music to Be Murdered By was a bit of a mixed bag, "Darkness" is one of the most intriguing story songs he has ever written. As the first bars come in, you think this is a more autobiographical tale about Eminem questioning his star power as he deals with nerves in his hotel room before a show. On the other hand, something seems a bit off as you make your way through the rest of the song, as this character's thoughts get more twisted.
Once the final verse opens up, you realize that this is being told from the perspective of the Las Vegas shooter, who notoriously killed over 50 concertgoers in 2017. The wound may have still been fresh for the public, but Eminem managed to turn one of music's most inexplicable acts into something unprecedented.
