10 Songs That Are Meant To Confuse You
4. Times Like These - Foo Fighters
Any casual fan of the Foo Fighters knows that you're not expected to do your musical homework before listening. As much as Dave Grohl is a monster behind nearly every instrument he plays, it's nice like he's trying to right the most complex musical arrangement this side of Dream Theater or anything. On the rarest occasion though, something a bit more confusing will find its way into some of the Foos' classic tunes.
For the most part, Times Like These has become a staple of the Foos shows and a testament to the power of rock and roll, considering that the whole thing was written as a bit of a response to a tumultuous time among the band members. Once you actually listen to the riff though, it can be a bit off trying to get the timing exactly right to fit with the rest of the song.
In the grand tradition of songs like Money, this is actually in 7/4 time, which is made known in the way that they leave one extra guitar flourish in the mix before starting things back up again. Even when you sit down to learn it, the riff can feel like it's tripping over itself to the finish. While times like these can be a little hit or miss, it's best to at least have the time down first before moving forward.
