10 Songs That Broke Up Bands

8. The Mardi Gras Album - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival is a band that you throw on when you want to have a good time. Though some of their leanings towards country music and folk rock can seem passe nowadays, tracks like "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary" have become some of the most celebrated rock songs of the late '60s. In fact, pretty much the only thing Creedence could have done wrong was drop their feel good attitude. Enter Mardi Gras.

Right out of the gate, this album was one of the biggest duds in rock history, with the band trying to assemble some cohesion after Tom Fogerty's departure and their venomous attitude towards each other. Things may have looked decent, but the actual lyrics of these tunes are evidence that everything is going horribly wrong.

The group were already somewhat kneecapped after splitting up their songwriting into a democratic process, but the band's unwillingness to tolerate each other resulted in some of the most mean-spirited songs of their career. From John Fogerty's indifference on "Lookin for a Reason" to the passive aggressive insults on Stu Cook's "Take it Like a Friend," this is the sound of everyone's feel-good band getting nasty. Mardi Gras was already an album that was put together to fulfill record contract obligations, but this is the musical equivalent of watching your parents fight.
