10 Songs That Changed Rock History
3. Starman - David Bowie
By the start of the '70s, we had already gone through some pretty weird fashions for rock and rollers. I mean, anyone who has the confidence to wear the neon colored parkas at Woodstock should be awarded for their commitment to the rock genre. Once we got ahold of David Bowie though, we found out that we had only scratched the surface of what rock could look like.
Although Bowie's real rise to the top starts at Space Oddity, Starman was the moment that really solidified him as a superstar in the years going forward, with the perfect song subject to boot. While still being rooted in the same space theme as his bigger hit, Starman feels like the thesis statement for Bowie's career, being the almighty cosmic figure who's going to blow our minds wherever he can, whether it be through music or his image.
And it's not like he didn't deliver either, taking rock into every corner that he could think of on albums like Station to Station, Heroes, and even stuff like Earthling in the back half of his career. Up until his death in 2016, he was still surprising us with Blackstar, giving his own eulogy before he passed away just a few days later. The Starman may have moved on to other lands, but this song is going to be with us forever.
