10 Songs That Got To Number One By Two Different Artists
3. Respect - Otis Redding And Aretha Franklin
If the song Respect had stayed an Otis Redding original for the rest of time, chances are no one would have known what it was. As much as it was a strong force to be reckoned with in the mid '60s, you could probably hear a thousand of soul men trying their hand at a song about not getting enough respect (read as: loving) from their ladies at night. In Redding's own words though, Respect never got the reputation it deserved until "that little girl stole it from me."
By just changing a few bits and pieces and adding her amazing gospel vocals, this is the song that really introduced Aretha Franklin to the world. Compared to the typical soft spoken vocals of someone like Diana Ross around the same time, Franklin was every bit the belter that her reputation would lead you to believe, almost as if she's scolding her man while she's singing.
Even people who had no idea what soul music even was could appreciate a song like this, becoming a staple of the women's rights movement and a standard for anyone who's ever felt like they were stepped on by their significant other. When you have this passion in your voice, is it the worst thing in the world to ask to hear it on blast? Maybe a little bit...just a little bit.
