10 Songs That Ruined Otherwise Perfect Albums

4. Definitely Maybe - "Digsy's Diner"

Like their heroes The Beatles, Oasis struggle to resist the lure of a disruptive comedy song. “She’s Electric” is the outright dud of the sophomore album, but given the streamlined swagger and focus of debut Definitely Maybe, “Digsy’s Diner” is the more egregious of the joke tracks.

The decision to include it seems baffling, especially for a band as humourless as Oasis. Definitely Maybe is one of the great British debuts, five working class Mancunian lads believably singing about being rock ‘n’ roll stars, then living forever on a diet of cigarettes and alcohol.

And then they blow it all by launching into a tune about, of all things, lasagna. It doesn’t help that this particular Italian dish lends itself to Liam’s worst vocal tics - he stretches out the word for an ungodly length in between Noel’s primary school quality rhymes.

There’s an argument to be made that album closer “Married With Children” is equally a comedy track, but this one has a lot more charm, and a far less grating tune, than “Digsy’s Diner”. Oasis would become increasingly indulgent as the years wore on, but their decision to include this tune on their statement album should surely have been kiboshed by someone at the label.
