10 Songs That Were Painful To Make
8. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Most metal fans tend to remember where they were the day they heard their first Black Sabbath album.
Aside from being one of the first utterances of heavy metal in the history of rock, this debut album still sounds ferocious today, feeling like sinking into the deepest depths of Hell with every song. Then again, Tony Iommi may have had to make a deal with the devil to get his riffs - it only cost him his fingers!
Just a few days prior to deciding to pursue music full time, Iommi's job at a sheet metal factory ended when he was on the metal presses and had the tips of his fingers cut off of his hand. Even though this kind of accident should have spelled the end of his career, the work of artists like Django Reinhart inspired Iommi to try some different avenues with his playing.
Using wax tips on the first record, Tony began using heavier strings and tuning down the pitch of his guitar to give him more traction, which resulted in the heavy sounds that we know and love today.
Though many fans have debated time and time again what constitutes being under the heavy banner, willing to play your instrument after you've lost half of your fingers is probably one of the most metal things one could ever attempt.
