10 Songs Which Gave Birth To Heavy Metal

9. Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez55X-oYOyY Released: 1967 On "Sunshine of Your Love" it's all about the riff; and what a riff it is! Still firmly rooted in Blues and Psychedelia, Heavy Metal's dawning can be heard in Cream's repetitive and ominous downbeat groove. Released in 1967, by arguably the worlds first supergroup consisting of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, the power-trio (also the world's first) created an unorthodox sound so heavy it revolutionised the Blues and put a British spin on an American staple. Jack Bruce provided consummate bass and vocals, while Eric Clapton somehow managed to make his instrument perform as both Rhythm and Lead guitar but the band's true 'Metal' influence can be found within Ginger Baker's drumming. Disregarding the established rules, a theme commonplace in Heavy Metal's frequent flaunting of boundaries and restrictions, Baker carved his own path. Utilising tribal rhythms and emphasising beats 1 and 3, in direct contrast to Rock N' Roll's standard practice of emphasising beats 2 and 4, "Sunshine Of Your Love" still sounds as uniquely hypnotic and otherworldly an incredible 47 years later. Jimi Hendrix covered the song and if Hendrix deems a song worthy, its got to be something special. Heavy Metal was creeping closer.

I love Heavy Metal, and generally anything that involves a guitar and loud noises, so I figured it was about time I put all the useless information in my head to good use and start writing a few things. Most of the time I'll be writing nonsense but occasionally I may surprise myself and appear half-way knowledgable.....but you can be the judge of that. Thanks for your fleeting attention!
