10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Heroin
6. "There She Goes" (The La's)
This undeniably catchy, jangly ballad from The La’s appears to weave a simple yarn of young unrequited love. However, despite its seemingly innocent (and radio-friendly) chorus and melody, the song’s lyrics ”Racing through my brain…pulsing through my vein” expose a much darker side.
Moreover, frontman Lee Mavers’ eccentric and reclusive behavior only furthered drug-fueled speculation. The proto Britpop band from Liverpool first earned critical praise while touring throughout the U.K. and first released "There She Goes" as a single in 1988.
Typical band infighting and chaos ensued — before re-releasing it two years later on their debut album under the Go! Disc label. Despite their moderate initial success, the band would soon be relegated to one-hit wonder status.
A decade later, the alt Christian-rock outfit, Sixpence None The Richer covered the song and enjoyed a major hit stateside — proving God has a twisted sense of humor and/or heroin’s not just for sinners.
