10 Songs You Didn't Know Were Sequels
7. Going Back To The Tracks At Christie Road - Outlaws
When Green Day released 2016's Revolution Radio, many fans were breathing a sigh of relief. After the disastrous rollout for the band's much maligned trilogy of albums, these pop punk brats returned in full force with an album full of hard hitting jams. When the band decided to slow things down a bit, their inspiration drew a little closer to home than you might think.
In the middle of the record, "Outlaws" is one of the album's highlights, with a laid-back 60's style melody as the lyrics detail a look back to simpler times. However, Billie Joe Armstrong said that there was a bit more to lines like "we destroyed suburbia" in an interview. When composing the track, the band saw this look back to their punk rock roots as a sort of sequel song to their reflective track "Christie Road" from Kerplunk.
While "Christie Road" talks about a stoner kid going back to his stomping grounds to chill, "Outlaws" is the point when you return to that same spot once you've grown up and are looking for closure as to where to go after you move on from your adolescent years. This song is certainly not replacing "Good Riddance" as the band's most popular ballad, but its poignant message is sure to hit home with any fan who has followed Green Day across decades of punk rock excellence.
