10 Songs You Didn't Know Were Sequels
2. The Boy From Alive Becomes A Murderer - Once
Pearl Jam's debut record Ten was a real breath of fresh air in the early 90's. Here was a band from Seattle who definitely fit the grunge mold, but also had traces of more classic rock songwriting techniques hidden just beneath the surface.
Though it has been difficult to figure out some of Eddie Vedder's lyrics over the years, many alternative fans know the basis of the song "Alive" revolves around a man who figures out his real father has died and his mother then trying to seduce him. This would be a tragic experience for any kid, but what people forget is that the man's fate doesn't stop after the guitar solo.
Even though the sequence is out of order, the album opener "Once" is what ensues after the boy from "Alive" escapes his life at home. With all of his pent-up aggression and rage, he goes on a killing spree throughout his town. While it may feel like a giant outburst from a mentally unstable kid, the lyrics seem to reason that the boy must exact his aggression on something in order to feel sane.
There may not be much hope for him going forward, but our madman insists that "Once upon a time I could control myself."
