10 Songs You're Not Supposed To Understand

1. I Am The Walrus - The Beatles

A lot of the Beatles lyrics feel like pure poetry when you read them back. Though most of their earlier songs dealt with the generic love song formula, the back half of their career saw them expanding to more adult themes from "Norwegian Wood" to "Something." There is so much nuance to the band's later material, but "I Am The Walrus" is the one song even fans admit is nonsense.

From one line to the next, John Lennon strings together words that feel like the ramblings of someone out of their mind on LSD. Though the song doesn't flow as smoothly as other Beatles' classics, Lennon actually wrote this with the intent to confuse the listener.

After hearing about a school teacher in England who was dissecting the meaning of Beatles songs, Lennon wrote "Walrus" to intentionally confuse them, even quoted as saying "let the f***ers figure that one out."

It may have just been an experiment in trolling, but the rest of the song holds up really well, with the Fab Four pulling out all the stops to create one of the most avant garde songs to come out of the pop music sphere. You're going to get nowhere if you just follow the lyrics to "Walrus," but when you pair them with the surreal accompaniment, everything starts to fall into place.
