10 Terrible Rock Songs That Killed Classic Albums
6. Dominated Love Slave - Green Day
It took a while for the core foundation of Green Day to really fall into place. As much as 39/Smooth was an impressive start for the pop punk giants, it wasn’t until Tre Cool joined the band on Kerplunk that things really started to make sense, bringing us the first versions of songs like Welcome to Paradise as well as fan favorites like 2000 Light Years Away. These guys were still kids though, and some of that crude humor did find its way onto the final tape.
Written as a bit of a goof to get Tre comfortable in the band, Dominated Love Slave is the band trading instruments, with the drummer singing and playing guitar while Billie Joe Armstrong mans the drums. With a country and western flair to the whole thing, this is more or less just a novelty song that Tre brings to the table here, talking about how much he loves to partake in different sadomasochistic activities, from being slapped in the forehead with a chain to having staples get driven into his skin.
There’s definitely a place for a song like this, but it’s definitely a different beast to hear this in the context of a live show than a proper record, with classics like Who Wrote Holden Caulfield coming just a few songs later. Tre is definitely a funny guy and there are more than a few lines here that’ll give you a bit of a chuckle, but even their producer for Dookie knew to keep this as a hidden track rather than putting it right in the middle of the record.
