10 Terrible Rock Songs That Killed Classic Albums
4. Digsy's Dinner - Oasis
Lemme ask you something…did you know that Oasis really liked the Beatles? If you couldn’t tell by everything about them, the Gallagher Brothers clearly worship at the altar of Lennon and McCartney, and have been outspoken about the Fab Four’s imprint on their music. Although they admitted to listening to Revolver during the making of Definitely Maybe, they may have taken a few too many cues from the Beatles on one of the album’s final tracks.
Right before Slide Away closes up shop with one of the band’s greatest anthems, Digsy’s Dinner is one of the schmaltziest songs these guys have ever put to tape, driven by a kooky piano riff and lyrics that are all about this man asking someone over for tea so they can indulge in lasagna. All of the guitar feedback of the last few songs have been thrown out the window, with a honky tonk piano sound in its place, almost bringing to mind the kind of music hall tracks that Paul McCartney would put into the Beatles’ albums like on Honey Pie or Your Mother Should Know.
It may have worked back in the ‘60s, but it has no place on an album like this, especially coming out of Liam’s Manchester drawl, almost sounding sarcastic coming out of his mouth. The lyric about being the best days of our lives may have been a good snapshot of the band’s attitude at the time, but if you swapped this out for one of the brilliant B-sides, no one would have cared.
