10 Terrible Songs By Perfect Rock Bands
1. Revolution 9 - The Beatles
The Beatles’ entire career was always about being ahead of the curve. Their lovable moptop period may have been fun, but the Fab Four always had plans to move further, making one innovation after the next and creating some of the greatest album experiences that rock and roll had ever heard. The White Album definitely belongs in that company, but some of the experimentation tended to go a little too far on the back half of the record.
Around the time they were taking a retreat in India, John Lennon became more interested in the avant garde thanks to his new friend Yoko Ono, which blossomed into this alternate version of Revolution. While most people were already familiar with the single rock version of the song and even the subdued acoustic version, Revolution 9 is a jump off the deep end in terms of experimentation, being a sort of sound collage that both John and Yoko worked on together.
While George Harrison was originally supportive, this track is the exact opposite of what you come to the Beatles for, being 8 straight minutes of everything from a man randomly saying the phrase ‘Number 9’ to different noises strung together and Yoko saying phrases into the microphone for no reason. The idea behind this song may have been to create a revolution inside your mind, but it reads more like a musical horror story.
