10 Terrible Songs By Perfect Rock Bands
4. Stupidmop - Pearl Jam
As Pearl Jam’s star began to rise, Eddie Vedder was getting more and more uncomfortable with his star power. While he definitely had love for every kid who actually connected with his music, the jock crowd that identified with his music rubbed him the wrong way, leading to him bowing out of interviews and refusing to release music videos. That didn’t stop the band from growing, until we got one of the biggest curveballs yet on Vitalogy.
For all of the great songs that appear on this album, they were definitely going through some stuff on this record, almost like they’re venting for half the runtime. Although the end of the album closes nicely on the ballad Immortality, the album still has 8 more minutes for Stupid Mop to yuck things up. There’s no real genre to put on a song like this, being composed of recordings that Eddie made off of his TV of people jabbering about nonsense and the band trying to play in the background.
There might be a lead guitar fill here and there, but the majority of this song just makes you wonder whether the guys in the band are okay instead of actually listening to it. Vedder remained proud of it though, calling it one of the most moving tracks on the entire album. That’s fair, but that doesn’t stop most of us from wanting to hit that skip button whenever it comes on.
