10 Times Hard Rock Bands Went Acoustic (And Nailed It)
9. Planet Caravan - Black Sabbath
Tony Iommi has pretty much become a god amongst riff writers at this point. Throughout the history of Black Sabbath, Iommi's musical mind has gifted us with some of the most demented and evil guitar figures in metal history, from "Iron Man" to "Heaven and Hell." Even with all of those under his belt, Iommi's purest musical movement has to be in "Planet Caravan."
Structured around just two chords, this track off of Paranoid was a drastic departure from the Sabbath we knew and loved. Why were the hymns of doom traded in for this mellow crap...about a love song no less?
Alarm bells may have been ringing at the time, but this track has become a beloved Sabbath deep cut, with Iommi flexing his chops on jazz guitar. While Iommi's style is all his own, one can hear influences of jazz greats like Django Reinhart when he takes the solo on this tune.
Even with the subdued feel, Ozzy Osbourne also steps up to the plate, almost crooning his way through this celestial trip through the stars. The song ended up becoming so engrained in Sabbath lore that lifelong fans Pantera ended up covering it on their brutal Far Beyond Driven album.
Sabbath acolytes may have been crying "sellout," but when your "ballad" is so good that even Pantera have to pay their respects, you know you've got something great on your hands.
