10 Times Musicians Trolled Their Audience
4. Message To Harry Manback - Tool
By the time the mid 90's started rolling, Tool were quickly gaining a reputation as one of metal's most interesting bands. At a time when nu metal pretentiousness was thriving, these guys were playing some of the most off-the-wall music the metal world had ever heard. As they reached their peak with 1998's Aenima, the band also found time to work in a few humorous asides here and there.
While the band was recording in Los Angeles, frontman Maynard James Keenan had a few shady characters visiting him at his home, one of which was an Italian gentleman who would show up, eat, and refuse to leave. Once Keenan finally kicked him out of his house, the man left him a message on his answering machine with insults that could put any modern troll to shame.
Seeing the humor in the message, Keenan decided to take the recording into the studio during the sessions and laid down a piano track to accompany the lengthy diatribe. The song became one of the main segues of the record, which worked so well the band eventually featured more of the message on the box set Salival. Tool have always been known as a pretty heady group, but this tune shows that they can be equally as witty when the time called for it.
