The tragic murder of Tupac Shakur shows just how extreme this rivalry grew to become, causing the death of one of the scene's brightest and most beloved stars.

Tupac was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996 while attending a Mike Tyson fight. The murder remains unsolved to this day, with many theories still circulating about the circumstances. Theories range from it being a gang-related hit, to the event being orchestrated by Shakur in order to fake his own death.

Another theory, adopted by Snoop Dogg, is that Suge Knight - who was also in the car with Tupac - had a hand in the death of his own protege. Rumours swirled at the time that Tupac was keen to jump ship and start his own record label where he would own all his own music going forward. It's not too hard to see why this wouldn't have appealed to Knight if this was the case.

A 1998 memo filed with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department details Snoop telling a Sheriff's lieutenant that he believed Knight had Tupac killed. He also believed himself to be in danger for leaving Death Row. While the circumstances surrounding his passing are unclear, Tupac's legacy lives on and his status as a legend is unquestionable.
