10 Ultimate Ska Anthems

5. Madness - "Baggy Trousers"

Hailing from North London, the fun-loving Madness, who named themselves after Prince Buster’s classic song, were the first ska group to become a household name around the world.

As keen champions of ska’s Jamaican roots, two of the band’s biggest hits were “One Step Beyond”, a cover of another Buster classic, and the “The Prince”, an ode to Buster himself. Occupying a unique space between the more serious political style of 2 Tone, and the utterly outrageous style of Bad Manners, Madness sang of Camden life with a curious wit and a wry sense of humour.

The single “Baggy Trousers”, which spent twenty weeks on the UK charts, perfectly encapsulates all that comprises the Madness sound and image; with its lively rhythm, funny lyrics, and goofy accompanying music video, which featured Chas Smith’s “nutty” dancing, as well as saxophonist Lee Thompson flying through the air on a wire.

Madness’s tale of lone gone school days, naughty classmates and an ill-fitting uniform, penned by singer Suggs, was an instant sing-a-long success, inspired by fellow performer Ian Dury’s penchant for sharp, list-style lyrics.

With its clanging bell, boisterous sax, and pleasing harmonica solo, the frenzied “Baggy Trousers”, manages to pack a massive punch in under three minutes.
