10 Underrated Albums By Huge Bands
2. The Big Come Up - The Black Keys (2002)
Any Black Keys record pre Brothers (2010) is criminally underrated. Brothers was the first time they were truly able to turn their free flow sound, into a body of concise and fully formed rock songs. But their previous records all had a certain raw charm to them.
This was rough and ready blues, filtered through bust up amplifiers, and it was great. Being a little strapped for cash in the early days, the duo had no other choice than to record in Patrick Carney's basement with second hand equipment. And, you can definitely tell, but it only adds to the experience. It sounds like you're sitting in a dingy subterranean room, with water dripping on you and the faint smell of damp in your nose. All you have to distract yourself, is these boys jamming out, and it's a damn fine distraction.
Given the achievements of the bands later career, its no wonder their earliest stuff goes unregarded these days. You can imagine what tracks like, I'll Be Your Man and The Breaks, might have sounded like if they were given the professional studio treatment. Many of these earlier songs could have been hits if they had come out, post the bands ascent to mainstream success.
