10 Underrated Albums By Legendary Rock Music Bands
2. Tiny Music - Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots always seemed to get somewhat of a raw deal in the world of alternative rock. Right when everyone was making brooding music and all eyes were shifting towards Seattle, the sheer fact that these guys were coming from San Diego made them look like posers, with some of the purists of the genre casting them out as wannabes. Once grunge collapsed in on itself in the mid ‘90s though, Tiny Music was the record that helped STP exist past any of those Pearl Jam comparisons.
Whereas most of the grunge musicians were either breaking up or about to go through a rough patch in their career, Stone Temple Pilots completely switched up their sound, going for somewhere between the slick sounds of pop rock and even a hint of glam in their presentation, with Scott Weiland presenting himself as somewhere between Jim Morrison and David Bowie.
There almost isn’t a real way to categorize every one of these songs, having a much different character than anything else in the alternative sphere at the time, like the raw ballad of Lady Picture Show or dabbling in more funky sounds on Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart, all while Weiland gets in touch with the higher end of his voice on most of the tracks. There might not be as many crowd pleasers that you would have gotten out of the grunge crowd, but in 1996, making an album that was nothing but glam and pastel colors from back to front was probably one of the most alternative things you could have done.
