10 Underrated Bruce Springsteen Songs You Should Listen To
7. Part Man, Part Monkey (1998)
With its hellacious chord progression and groovy rhythm, this is a song that just begs to be Shazamed. The result will raise a few eyebrows though. If you were asked which non-reggae artist, in the early 1990s, recorded a reggae rock song about the clash between the theory of evolution and Christianity, maybe someone like Sting would be a reasonable guess. Unlike... the actual correct answer.
Bruce's handling of this controversial subject is so clever. "Part Man, Part Monkey" is anything but a preachy and/or boring consensus-seeking call for a ceasefire. It is one of his most playful, funkiest and downright funniest songs. As proof of that, take the first verse, and its witty take on the Scopes trial:
"They prosecuted some poor sucker in these United States
For teaching that man descended from the apes
They coulda settled that case without a fuss or fight
If they'd seen me chasin' you, sugar, through the jungle last night
They'da called in that jury and a one two three said
Part man, part monkey, definitely"
Another potential showpiece that ended as an outtake, this is one of the (many) songs that make one thankful Tracks was released.
