Aside from one line speaking of "ghosts and goblins", this song has very little to do with Harry Potter. "Why on earth should it have anything to do with it ?", you may wonder. Well, it was originally penned... for the soundtrack of The Sorcerer's Stone.
It is unclear if would've been a propos for the film, or how well it would've mingled with the rest of John Williams' score, but nonetheless, on the face of it, it is a four-leaf clover of a lullaby.
Some will undoubtedly find that at times, this stroller walk takes us too dangerously close to soppiness. But when composing a gentle ballad to sing your young son to sleep, should you really worry about not being artsy enough ? "I'll Stand By You" is everything it needs to be: cosy, tender, appeasing, with a beautiful piano riff played by Bruce himself. The chorus is mesmerizing, and the emphasis is rightly put on the most important word of the sentence, and of the song.
When in 2019 it was included in the soundtrack of Blinded By The Light - a film that largely revolves around the relationship between a father and a son, in the context of the latter's life-shaking encounter with Bruce's music - you could say this song had finally found its place.
