10 Underrated Classic Rock Albums Of The '70s
8. Queen I - Queen
Queen is such a significance presence in rock music that just the very utterance of their name conjures up their operatic sound. Even when dipping their toes into other genres, the band's sound had an heir of professionalism that radiated from the throat of Freddie Mercury. However, even the future of rock royalty had to start somewhere.
Long before the days of rock and roll decadence, Queen's debut record is the band at their rawest, with songs that verge on progressive rock. Though most debuts are known to be a bit rough around the edges, the band's signature for harmonious guitar parts and layered vocals is already firmly intact on tracks like "Keep Yourself Alive." With each passing track, every single member is out for blood from the firm thrashing of Mercury's "Liar" to the gutteral stomp of Brian May's "Son and Daughter."
The ending of the album even features a prequel to the song "Seven Seas of Rhye," which would eventually be brought to life on the band's second record. Queen were bound to take their music in new and exciting directions, but this impressive debut gave the world the first taste of the band that would take the rock world by storm.
