10 Unusual 1970s Lead Singers

10. David Thomas, Pere Ubu (Est. 1975)

Gaze upon the man once known as €œCrocus Behemoth.€ For somebody so uncomfortable with self-promotion, David Thomas certainly created a spot-on rock name. As singer for art rock group Pere Ubu, Thomas was a hilarious monster. He resembled Frankenstein in his broad gestures. His high singing voice contrasted uncomfortably with his lumbering stage presence. Pere Ubu€™s performances were like confrontational theater. Thomas played the bird king, flailing and shouting lyrics (€œI got these arms and legs that flip flop flip flop€) amidst the band€™s urban jungle music. Between yelps into the microphone, he muttered and shrugged to himself. In a way, his madman antics seem closed-off and even contrived€” it€™s hard to see where he€™s coming from. Others on this list, you€™ll see, were more emotionally naked.
