10 Upbeat Rock Songs With Darker Meanings

2. Mr. Brightside - The Killers (2003)

Has this song ever been played without everyone in earshot instantly jerking to attention, ready to scream the opening lines, no matter of their vocal abilities?

Originally released in 2003, Mr. Brightside has soared in popularity, particularly in the UK, when earlier this year the BBC reported that the single has spent a total of over 5 years (non- consecutively) in the UK charts.

With its longest running period of 36 uninterrupted weeks of UK Top 100 chart time, it's pretty incredible, considering the songs subject matter is all about the bitter and mind consuming paranoia that comes with being cheated on.

But, us Brits love to indulge in the nostalgia of heart break, betrayal and jealousy... We are a nation who spawned Morrissey after all... (sigh).

Being such an emotionally repressed bunch of individuals, we need someway to release the pressure. And, apparently our most popular way is by getting absolutely trollied and screaming along to Brandon Flowers's expressions of cathartic heartbreak.
