Director Jonas Akerlund has already appeared on this list, but it is his video for The Prodigy's colourfully titled "Smack My Bitch Up" that represents his controversial tour de force. Playing with the viewer's sense of perception, the point-of-view video took us through one debauched night of drinking, drug use and sex, before a wonderful pay-off revealed the subject of the video to be a woman. There may well have been a conscious effort to subvert stereotypes here, and to show that domestic abuse was a two way street, but the manner of the video, and the provocative name of the song (which saw it widely banned) made that politicised agenda a little more difficult to accept.
