10 Weird Backwards Messages In Rock Songs

6. Darling Nikki - Prince

Around the time that bands were coming under fire for what seemed to be praising demons, Prince was being dragged through the mud for a very different reason. Though the PMRC was normally reserved for profane language, there were more than a few people getting uncomfortable with just how sexually explicit the Purple One wanted to be on albums like Dirty Mind. As if to cleanse himself a little bit though, playing Darling Nikki takes things in the exact opposite direction.

It's not hard to see why the original would have ruffled some feathers back in the day though, with the entire song being about Prince meeting Nikki for a wild night of sexual fantasies. Once you hook it up to the turntable and play it in reverse, there are more than a few spots where you actually here some legitimate preaching.

And this isn't the kind of preaching that advocates for demons. Here we have the sound of what appears to be a man giving a real sermon for Christianity, almost like the kind of thing that you would hear if a Jehovah's Witness came to your door. If nothing else, is there some kind of message to be found in having a backwards message like this? Like, would the opposite of this sleazy piece of rock and roll be having a born again conversion? If so, Prince has practically created an institution of rock and roll religion.
